it was not a joke

(steve and jane are married)

me: i never understand women..

steve: you never do? no wonder. i have been living with her (jane) for years, but i never understand her. haha

jane: me neither. i never understand him (steve), ahahaha

i thought it was a joke and we were all lol-ing. now i regret not to ask them how they maintain their marriage this long.
